Cavs Pick Up Options On Darius Garland, Dylan Windler, Isaac Okoro

The Cavaliers have exercised the fourth-year options on point guard Darius Garland and guard/forward Dylan Windler, and third-year option on guard/forward Isaac Okoro, the team announced in a press release.

Garland, 21, is 6-foot-1 and averaged 17.4 points and 6.1 assists in 54 games last season. He was averaging a career-high 9.0 assists in his first four appearances this season.

“Additionally, Garland was one of only four players in the entire NBA to post at least 17.0 points, 6.0 assists, a .390 clip from three and a .840 mark from the foul line in 2020-21, joining Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving and Kyle Lowry,” the press release noted. “He became the quickest in franchise history to reach 200 career three-pointers (107 games), achieving that mark with his fourth trey in a win over Chicago on April 21.”

Windler, 25, is 6-7 and missed all of his rookie year and all but 31 games last season, averaging 5.2 points. Injured again, Windler appeared in just three of the Cavs’ first seven games.

Okoro, 20, is 6-4 and was the No. 5 pick out of Auburn in 2020. He averaged 9.6 points and 3.1 rebounds in 76 games as a rookie. He lost his starting role to Lauri Markkanen and has missed three straight games so far with a hamstring injury this season.

“An NBA All-Rookie Second Team selection last season, Okoro (646 points, 62 three-pointers, 62 steals, 24 blocks) became just the third rookie in franchise history to record at least 500 points, 50 threes, 50 steals and 20 blocks in a single season, joining LeBron James (2003-04) and Kyrie Irving (2011-12),” the Cavs wrote.

The NBA to exercise third- and -fourth-year options for teams is Monday.

“The moves lock in the salaries of $8,920,795 for Garland and $4,037,278 for Windler, who will both be eligible for rookie scale extensions next summer,” wrote Arthur Hill of Hoops Rumors. “Okoro will receive $7,040,880 in 2022/23 and will be extension eligible during the 2023 offseason, assuming Cleveland picks up his fourth-year option as well.”
