The Wizards haven’t started this well in 15 years and star guard Bradley Beal is loving it.
In fact, after Washington improved to 5-1 with Saturday’s win over the Celtics, Beal said he has no desire to play anywhere else.
“I want to win with D.C.,” he told reporters.
And why not? The Wizards remade themselves around Beal in the offseason, sending Russell Westbrook to the Lakers in a blockbuster trade — and winging up with the likes of Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, Spencer Dinwiddie and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
They also added first-time coach Wes Unseld Jr., and it’s been a case of so far, so good, for a team that hasn’t been relevant for some time. But today, the Wizards appear to have experience, depth and a winning mindset.
It’s likely a big reason why Beal said has been telling teammates that they “can be part of history here.”
All this, and the Wizards have been missing center Daniel Gafford, who’s been out with a right quad contusion. Gafford is officially listed as day-to-day.
“It’s going to be scary,” when the Wizards gel, Beal said.
That said, the Wizards aren’t getting too excited. It’s a long season and more obstacles surely await. That’s just life in the NBA.
“It’s great, but we even talked about it after the game, we’re not satisfied, nor should we be,” Unseld Jr. said after beating the Hawks on Friday. “It’s early in the season.”
Kuzma echoed his coach.
“It’s a good start, but in all reality it doesn’t mean anything. You can start off 4-1, 5-1 and you see teams all the time start out hot and then they just fall to the ground,” Kuzma said.
“I always like to say, Jason Kidd taught me this and it’s simple; the regular season is just a rehearsal for the big dance, which is the playoffs. I don’t think we’re excited about being (our record). I think we all have room to improve and it’s going to take time.”
