The Bulls are signing small forward Alfonzo McKinnie via the NBA’s hardship exception, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
McKinnie, 29, is 6-foot-7 and has been playing for the Mexico City Capitanes of the G League. He last appeared in the NBA last season, appearing in 39 games with the Lakers and averaging 3.1 points.
He has also spent time with the Cavaliers (2019-20), Warriors (2018-19) and Raptors (2017-18). Overall, he has played 165 games in the NBA.
McKinnie is averaging 24.3 points and shooting 43 percent on 3-pointers in the G League, as Charania noted.
The Bulls have been decimated by injuries and especially, players in the league’s health and safety protocols.
Point guard Alex Caruso (hamstring) has missed time recently and power forward Patrick Williams (wrist) is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
Meanwhile, guard/forward DeMar DeRozan, guard Javonte Green, point guard Coby White, small forward Derrick Jones Jr. and guard Matt Thomas are all in the league’s protocols.
Earlier this week, the Bulls signed forward Stanley Johnson to help fill in. Johnson and McKinnie stand a chance to be kept on the roster, or at worst nearby, even when everyone else returns.
