Sixers Notes: Jaylen Brown, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, center options

Sixers newcomer Jaylen Brown believes he deserved more recognition for last season.

In a video discussing the launch of his own shoe brand, Brown said he felt he should have won the NBA’s MVP award while playing for the Celtics.

“I’ve been a top-five MVP candidate,” Brown said, via HoopsHype. “Should have been top one, but the media votes for that.”

Brown added that outside opinions no longer motivate him, saying he’s focused on continuing to improve rather than chasing awards.

KCP’s Role

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope may bring championship experience to Philadelphia, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll have a major role.

Adam Aaronson of The Philly Voice wrote that Caldwell-Pope is expected to sign with the Sixers after clearing waivers, though he may have to earn his place in coach Nick Nurse’s typically tight rotation.

Aaronson noted that Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons are projected to handle significant reserve minutes, leaving Caldwell-Pope to compete with returning forward Dominick Barlow and rookie guard Labaron Philon Jr. for playing time.

The veteran guard struggled offensively with Memphis last season, shooting 41 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from three-point range. Still, Aaronson believes Caldwell-Pope remains a worthwhile addition because of his championship pedigree and ability to complement star players.

Backup center

One area Philadelphia may not be finished addressing is behind Joel Embiid.

Aaronson suggested the Sixers could continue exploring the trade market for another center, identifying Pelicans big man Yves Missi as a potential target if New Orleans remains willing to listen to offers.

Missi, 22, would provide both immediate depth and long-term upside, though Aaronson acknowledged the asking price could be steep.

If that avenue doesn’t materialize, he also mentioned Jazz center Jaxson Hayes as another possible option.
