Celtics Open To Trading Dennis Schroder?

Opposing teams suspect that the Celtics will make point guard Dennis Schroder available ahead of the trade deadline, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Schroder, 28, is in his first season with the Celtics and is off to a fine start, averaging 17.5 points and 4.9 assists. He certainly has a moveable contract — as Boston signed him to a one-year deal worth $5.9 million in the offseason, using the team’s tax-payer midlevel exception.

As things stand today, the Celtics won’t have any salary cap space after the season and would be limited to offering Schroder a 20-percent raise in free agency, via his Non-Bird rights.

“As such, it might make more sense to recoup some value by getting what they can for him at the trade deadline — especially since the C’s don’t look like a legitimate contender at this point,” wrote Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors.

Sources have told Hoops Wire that the Celtics are actually open to moving most anyone on the roster, though their don’t seem to be any plans to blow things up and start again. Instead, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens seems intent on adding help so that Boston can quickly return to true contention.

“When you get into trade rumors, obviously, there’s going to be rumors, there’s going to be talks,” Stevens said on 98.5 The Sports Hub last month. “We have to be on the phones, but we also have to be prudent and smart about what we’re doing with our own team. I would say most of the time that I’ve been here at least, there’s a lot less to it that’s real.”
