The Timberwolves reportedly remain very interested in LeBron James. Whether they become a serious player in the sweepstakes may depend on Anthony Edwards.
According to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of ScoopB.com, sources within the Timberwolves organization say Minnesota would welcome the opportunity to add James.
One source put it simply: “Everybody’s interested in LeBron. He’s the big dog.”
The Wolves also continue searching for another power forward, making James an obvious basketball fit alongside Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Rudy Gobert and the rest of Minnesota’s core.
But here’s where things get interesting.
Robinson reported that Edwards has not personally reached out to James during free agency. According to one source, that could be the difference between Minnesota remaining on the outside looking in or becoming a legitimate contender.
“If Edwards were to make that call,” the source told Robinson, “Minnesota would instantly rocket to the center of the conversation.”
League sources continue to tell Hoops Wire that the Cavaliers remain the team many around the NBA believe has the edge in the James sweepstakes, with the Heat, Warriors and 76ers also receiving significant attention.
Minnesota has frequently been mentioned as a possible dark horse, though the Timberwolves have generally been viewed as a step behind those Eastern Conference contenders.
Robinson’s latest reporting suggests the organization would like to change that. Whether Edwards ultimately becomes more active in recruiting James remains to be seen.
