Kings Signing Veteran Sharpshooter Doug McDermott

The Kings are signing NBA free agent guard/forward Doug McDermott to a one-year contract, per Shams Charania of ESPN.Doug McDermott, Spurs, Kings, NBA

Whether or not the deal is guaranteed is anyone’s guess at this point, but given McDermott’s experience in the NBA, it likely is more than just a contract for training camp.

McDermott, 32, is 6-foot-6 and finished last season with the Pacers following a trade with the Spurs in February. Overall, he appeared in 64 games last season, averaging 5.5 points and shooting 41.0% on 3-pointers.

His numbers were better the previous year, when he averaged nearly double the points and was given more of an opportunity. It’s hard to know where he will fit in with Sacramento, though any team could use some perimeter punch off the bench.

That may especially be the case if Kevin Huerter is slow in his return from injury. Along with Huerter, the Kings have the likes of Malik Monk, former All-Star De’Aaron Fox and several others to knock down outside shots.

“Assuming McDermott signed for the veteran’s minimum (which is highly likely) and makes the regular season roster, he’ll count against the Kings’ cap for about $2.09MM, leaving the team’s salary roughly $3.74MM below the luxury tax line with 14 players under contract,’ wrote Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors.
