CLEVELAND — It’s 15-0, tied for the second-best start in NBA history. But the Cavaliers aren’t necessarily stunned about their record. Just pleased.
“It’s tough to be 15-0,” center Jarrett Allen said after the 128-114 home win over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. “Not many teams get to be in this position.
“I don’t want to say we’re surprised by it, I certainly think we’re capable. But it’s special.”
Only the Golden State Warriors (2016), Houston Rockets (1994), and Washington Capitols (1949) have started a season with similar dominance. The Warriors hold the all-time record with 24 consecutive wins en route to a a 73-9 season.
No matter, Cleveland’s victory over Charlotte was a showcase of depth and resilience. With All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell getting some much-needed rest, Ty Jerome stepped up in a big way, matching his career-high with 24 points. Darius Garland was electric, leading the team with 25 points and controlling the pace from the perimeter. Evan Mobley added an impressive 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Allen continued to anchor the paint with 21 points and 15 boards.
First-year head coach Kenny Atkinson — who has yet to experience defeat with Cleveland — emphasized the importance of looking at the bigger picture. The decision to rest Mitchell was not taken lightly, but the Cavs are playing the long game.
“It’s a long season,” Atkinson said. “We’ve got bigger games ahead. Keeping guys fresh is key.”
Up next, the Cavs visit the defending champion Boston Celtics, undoubtedly the biggest test yet.
“Same mindset,” Garland said of that one, shrugging. “Go in and win.”
