The Bulls have changed just about everything. Now they hope Caleb Wilson can help change the results.
Wilson, Chicago’s prized rookie, made quite an impression during Summer League, enough for one Bulls source to give ESPN’s Jamal Collier a fairly straightforward assessment.
“He looks like we got a dude,” the source said.
Well, that’s a start. Wilson scored 35 points in his Summer League debut and followed with another strong showing, establishing himself as an early Rookie of the Year candidate. He also wanted to keep playing after several other prominent rookies had already been shut down.
Perhaps none of that should be surprising given how Wilson spent part of his offseason.
His lone season at North Carolina ended in February after he broke his thumb and fractured his left wrist. Even while wearing a cast, Wilson told Collier he was able to hold a basketball and work on his shooting form.
So he did. A lot. Wilson estimated that he attempted between 2,000 and 2,500 3-pointers per day. Then he went to Las Vegas and buried seven threes in his Summer League opener.
“I’m glad I didn’t shoot threes in college,” Wilson said. “Because if I did, I wouldn’t be here. I don’t know where I’d be. I don’t think I’d be a Bull.”
Wilson has continued working twice a day at Chicago’s practice facility, according to Collier.
Fellow first-round pick Dailyn Swain called Wilson’s athleticism “generational,” while noting that the rookie has continued expanding his offensive game.
Of course, Summer League is Summer League. The real thing will tell us considerably more.
But after an offseason of major changes in Chicago, the Bulls seem pretty excited about finding out.
