Cavs officially announce Donovan Mitchell contract extension

The Cavaliers have formally announced Donovan Mitchell‘s new multi-year contract extension, putting the finishing touches on their biggest move of the offseason so far.

“Donovan has embodied exactly what it means to represent the Cleveland Cavaliers on and off the floor,” Altman said in a team press release. “From Day One, he embraced this organization, our fans and our community. He’s been clear in his desire to be here, and that speaks volumes about who he is.

“His leadership, competitive fire and professionalism have helped define our culture. Securing Donovan long term reflects our shared vision and our commitment to building toward another NBA championship in Cleveland.”

As we relayed earlier this week, Mitchell agreed to a reported four-year maximum extension, projected to be worth roughly $273 million. The deal replaces the player option in his previous contract and keeps him under team control through at least the 2029-30 season, with a player option for 2030-31.

The extension is the second Mitchell has signed since arriving in the blockbuster trade with Utah in 2022, further reinforcing his desire to remain in Cleveland despite years of speculation that he might eventually look elsewhere.

Mitchell is coming off another All-NBA season after averaging 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds while helping lead the Cavs to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018.

With Mitchell officially locked in, the Cavs’ attention now remains on the rest of the offseason, where James Harden is still expected to sign a new contract. And as you know, the Cavs continue to be linked to LeBron James in free agency.
