Kenny Atkinson never mentioned LeBron James by name. He probably didn’t have to.
Speaking from NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, the Cavaliers coach smiled when asked about Cleveland’s outlook for next season, making it clear there’s another reason for optimism beyond the current roster.

“You guys know there’s a little free agency thing going on right now,” Atkinson said during Amazon Prime’s Summer League broadcast. “That could be our real jump and you know what I’m talking about. That’s exciting too.”
If there was any doubt about what he meant, Atkinson offered another clue during an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio.
“This is an exciting time for us,” he said. “We’re in the mix for the greatest player of all time. … I know the state of Ohio, man, there’s something special there.”
Those comments are unlikely to quiet the speculation surrounding James’ future.
The Cavaliers continue to be viewed by many around the NBA as the favorites to land the four-time MVP, though the Warriors, Heat, Nuggets, 76ers and Timberwolves have also been linked to James.
Atkinson’s remarks also stand out because coaches generally avoid discussing players who aren’t under contract with their teams.
Whether the Cavs coach was simply having a little fun or intentionally fueling the excitement is anyone’s guess.
Either way, it’s becoming harder and harder to ignore the growing belief that something significant could be brewing in Cleveland.
