Cavs’ Tyrese Proctor to represent Australia in FIBA World Cup qualifiers

The Cavaliers may be in offseason mode, but Tyrese Proctor‘s summer is just getting started.

The rookie guard has been named to Australia’s national team roster for next month’s FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying games against Guam and the Philippines, giving him another opportunity to gain valuable experience before returning to Cleveland for his second NBA season.

Both games will be played in Perth, with Australia facing Guam on July 3 before taking on the Philippines three days later.

For Proctor, it’s another step in what has already been a lengthy journey with the Boomers program.

The Sydney native made his debut for Australia’s senior national team at just 16 years old during the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifying campaign. A year later, he helped Australia capture the Asia Cup title while emerging as one of the country’s brightest young prospects.

Now, after completing his first NBA season with the Cavs, Proctor will have a chance to continue his development on the international stage.

That’s something Cleveland is unlikely to mind.

The Cavs remain focused on competing for a championship after reaching the Eastern Conference finals this season, but continued growth from younger players remains important to the organization’s long-term outlook. Proctor is expected to be part of that equation.

Australia has already advanced to the second round of World Cup qualifying after posting a perfect 4-0 record in group play. The Boomers are currently ranked sixth in the world and are once again expected to qualify for the FIBA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar in 2027.

“Competing as a Boomer on Australian soil is always special,” Australia coach Adam Caporn said. “There’s a real excitement around this group and the opportunity to play in Perth in front of such a passionate basketball community.”

For Proctor, the assignment offers something every young player wants during the offseason — meaningful basketball.

And for the Cavaliers, every competitive rep could help prepare one of their promising young guards for an even bigger role next season.
