Cavs vs. Pistons, Game 3: Matchup, how to watch, what to expect

Alright. No more easing into this thing.

The Cavaliers are down 0-2, now back home, and running out of runway against the Pistons. And yes, to this point, it’s looked rough.

The guards haven’t been themselves. The defensive communication has been spotty. Open looks haven’t fallen.

Put it all together and it’s not exactly a recipe for winning on the road against a 60-win team.

But here’s the part that keeps this from feeling hopeless: The Cavs had a real shot in both games.

Fourth quarter. Chances to take control. Even brief leads. And then… it unraveled. Execution slipped. Decisions got shaky. Detroit made the plays Cleveland didn’t.

That’s the series so far.

What to expect

Let’s just say it. This isn’t officially a must-win. But it’s about as close as you get.

No team in NBA history has come back from 0-3. You fall behind there, and you’re not talking about adjustments anymore. You’re talking about the offseason.

So yeah, this one matters. A lot.

The formula hasn’t changed. It’s actually been staring the Cavs in the face the entire series.

Take care of the ball. Finish defensive possessions. Win the scrums. Crash the boards. And when you get clean looks, make them. That about covers it.

Detroit hasn’t overwhelmed them. The Pistons have just been steadier. More composed late. More precise when it counts. That’s the gap.

Now it shifts to Cleveland. Different building. Different energy. A chance to finally flip the feel of this thing.

As always, it more or less circles back to Donovan Mitchell. This is the moment. Not a good game. Not a decent stretch. A take-over game.

Along with that, the Cavs need James Harden to not just stop with the turnovers, but also organize things. More force inside will undoubtedly be required from Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley (especially Mobley).

But if Mitchell doesn’t tilt the floor? Then you’re asking for perfection everywhere else.

That’s a tough way to live this time of year.

If the Cavs punch back, this becomes a series again. If they don’t?

Then Game 4 starts feeling like something else entirely.
