Cavs’ future highly likely to be shaped by what happens in Game 7

This is it for the Cavaliers. Game 7 in Detroit isn’t just about advancing. It’s about everything that comes next.

On the surface, it’s simple. Win, and the season continues. Lose, and it ends. That’s how it will be remembered.

But the reality is heavier than that.

As Brian Windhorst of ESPN laid out, the outcome could ripple through Cleveland’s entire offseason.

The Cavs didn’t build this team to stall out in the second round again. Not after the trade for James Harden. Not with the league’s highest payroll and second-apron restrictions limiting flexibility.

That move was about more than this spring.

There’s already an understanding Harden will be back on a multiyear deal, sources say. Cleveland made sure of that before completing the trade. He had veto power. He wasn’t coming without long-term security.

So that part is set. What isn’t is everything around it.

Donovan Mitchell is extension-eligible this summer. He could sign a four-year deal now. He could also wait, hit free agency next year, and position himself for a significantly larger contract in 2027.

That decision alone changes the tone of the entire organization.

A short-term commitment brings stability. Waiting introduces uncertainty, even if Mitchell has given no indication that he wants out. Then come the roster questions.

Jarrett Allen continues to draw interest. Max Strus is on an expiring deal. Neither likely brings back star-level talent, which complicates any retooling.

And yes, there’s Evan Mobley. Untouchable to this point. That label tends to get tested when expectations aren’t met.

Oh, and the futures of coach Kenny Atkinson — and perhaps president of basketball operations Koby Altman — could be very much up in the air with another second-round exit.

That’s what Game 7 does. It forces clarity.

The Cavs have shown flashes. Big ones. They’ve also shown cracks. Turnovers. Inconsistency. Questions about identity. Now it’s one night. One result.

Win, and most of this gets pushed down the road. Lose, and the conversations start immediately.

  1. It is true that Altman has been afforded a long opportunity with a lot of dough and a lot of high draft picks. And here we are.

We have plenty of talent and assets.. We have a lack of direction, cohesion, and identity.

We sell guys instead of develop them. No reason you can’t do both. But we tell these guys to play like what we’re selling them as, instead of developing them into their best selves.
