Cavs Interested In Trade For Jazz Star Donovan Mitchell

If you’re an NBA team, it never hurts to work the phones when a talent such as Donovan Mitchell becomes available.Donovan Mitchell

Well, count the Cavaliers among the interested parties, according to veteran insider Ian Begley of SNY.tv.

As Hoops Wire has relayed, the Jazz and Cavs discussed a Collin Sexton sign-and-trade arrangement — but those talks were believed to be several weeks ago and never got serious, sources said.

Sexton is a restricted free agent, and while the Cavs are under the assumption he’ll return, they have kept their options open. He’s certainly a player the Jazz have had on the radar as they look to deal Mitchell.

For now, the Knicks are considered frontrunners in the Mitchell sweepstakes, though they clearly have some competition. The Hornets and Wizards — and now the Cavs — are among those who are also said to be in pursuit.

Along with taking some calls on Sexton, the Cavs have been making Cedi Osman available throughout the offseason. Utah is among those interested, sources said.

The primary untouchables on the Cavs’ roster at the moment are All-Stars Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen, as well as All-Rookie member Evan Mobley.

While the Cavs aren’t feeling any pressure to make a major deal, they have expressed an openness about everyone other than the m aforementioned “Big Three” being available for the right player.

Surely, Mitchell would be considered the type of young star who would offer a major boost to the Cavs’ dreams of quickly returning to contention, while not messing with their bright future.

But again, for now, talks between the Cavs and Jazz don’t seem to have a serious or “imminent” feel, sources said.

Here is what Begley wrote:

”The Cavs touched base with Utah about a Mitchell trade in recent days, per SNY sources. Cleveland’s level of interest in Mitchell is unknown but the Cavs have the young players and picks to put together a competitive package.”

That very much echoed what sources have told Hoops Wire — that the Cavs merely have an interest. But as Begley suggested, they also have the type of assets, including future picks, that fit the mold of what the Jazz reportedly seek.

Bottom line? Stay tuned. The Cavs may not necessarily be acting “aggressive” in trade talks, but they very clearly are active.

  1. Won’t pay Sexton but will trade the ludicrous ask for Spidey? Not wise and unlikely to be truth.
Ainge asking price for Donovan Mitchell is overblown, even the poorly run NY org could see that. Is he worth more than Sexton uh yes of course he is coming from a much better situation and are they essentially the same player if you swap rosters the past few seasons ? Without question.
Koby probably trying to move Sexton to Utah and get Barrett not Mitchell anyway since he has been in love with him forever
