Cavs remain interested in Jonathan Kuminga, but Jarrett Allen not part of equation

The Cavaliers haven’t moved on from Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga hasn’t moved any closer to Cleveland, either.

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Cavs remain interested in the unrestricted free agent even after agreeing to a one-year deal with Mario Hezonja. But as ESPN’s Shams Charania previously reported, getting a deal across the finish line remains difficult.

The biggest obstacle is finding a sign-and-trade package that appeals to the Hawks.

Dennis Schroder and Max Strus have frequently surfaced as possible trade candidates, but Fischer reported that the Cavs are reluctant to attach draft assets simply to move either contract.

Atlanta, meanwhile, has made it known that it would have much greater interest in Jarrett Allen. That doesn’t appear to be happening.

According to Fischer, the Cavs have not seriously entertained the idea of including Allen in Kuminga discussions, signaling they still view the veteran center as a key piece of their core.

Contract structure is another hurdle. Any player acquired in a sign-and-trade must receive at least a three-year contract, while Fischer reported Kuminga has little interest in being “boxed into” a three-year deal with unfavorable terms.

The Lakers remain involved as well, though Fischer added he has repeatedly heard there have been no meaningful trade discussions between Los Angeles and Atlanta despite speculation involving Jarred Vanderbilt and future draft compensation.

In other words, the Kuminga market appears to be where it has been for weeks. There is interest. There just isn’t much progress.
