A few days after the Celtics emerged as a possible landing spot for Devin Carter, they got their man. Or at least they got him a training-camp jersey.
Carter has agreed to join Boston and will compete for a standard roster spot or two-way contract, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported. Brian Robb of MassLive confirmed that Carter will receive an Exhibit 10 deal.
The Hawks waived Carter on Friday after acquiring him and a 2033 second-round pick from the Kings in June. His $5.16 million salary remains guaranteed, so Atlanta will continue paying him regardless of what happens in Boston.
Carter, 24, was selected by Sacramento with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft after being named Big East Player of the Year at Providence.
His NBA career has yet to match that draft status. Shoulder surgery delayed his debut, and ankle, back and calf injuries followed. Carter averaged 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 74 games over two seasons with the Kings, shooting 40.1 percent from the field and 27.4 percent on threes.
There were encouraging signs late last season, however. Carter averaged 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists over his final 12 appearances while shooting 46.1 percent overall and 37.5 percent from deep.
Boston currently has 14 players on standard contracts and two occupying two-way spots. Carter will compete with rookies Milos Uzan and Tucker DeVries, who also are attending camp on Exhibit 10 deals.
For the Celtics, it is a no-risk look at a former lottery pick. For Carter, it is another opportunity to prove that his difficult start does not have to define his career.
