The Celtics are bringing back a familiar name in a new role.
Boston has hired Isaiah Thomas as a pro and college scout, according to Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe. Thomas will be based in Seattle, his hometown, and has already been with team executives at the draft combine in Chicago.

He has been involved in prospect interviews and learning the organization’s evaluation process, per the report.
Thomas, 37, enjoyed the best stretch of his playing career in Boston, earning two All-Star selections and a second-team All-NBA nod in 2016-17, when he finished fifth in MVP voting.
A hip injury later that year changed the trajectory of his career, and he was traded that offseason in the deal that brought Kyrie Irving to the Celtics.
He never fully regained that form, bouncing around the league in the years that followed. His most recent NBA action came during the 2023-24 season.
Celtics president Brad Stevens has credited Thomas with helping establish the culture that has fueled the franchise’s success over the past decade.
Thomas has not formally retired as a player, but this move signals a clear step into the next phase.
