The Hornets have decided not to re-sign point guard Malachi Flynn after the expiration of his second 10-day contract. Charlotte instead signed guard Marcus Garrett to a 10-day deal, per a team release.
Flynn, 26, is 6-foot-1 and appeared in four games for the Hornets, averaging 4.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists. He has also spent time with the Raptors, Knicks and Pistons since entering the NBA in 2020.
Although the Hornets do not have an open spot on their 15-man roster, they continue to qualify for a hardship exception. This exception allows the team to temporarily carry an extra player due to the absence of four players — Brandon Miller, Tre Mann, Grant Williams, and Josh Okogie — who have each missed at least three consecutive games and are expected to remain sidelined for at least two more weeks.
Garrett is 6-5 and went undrafted out of Kansas in 2021, spending most of his professional career in the G League, including the past two seasons with the Greensboro Swarm, Charlotte’s affiliate. Garrett also appeared in 12 NBA games with the Heat on a two-way contract during his rookie season.
This season, Garrett has played in 40 games for the Swarm, averaging 10.4 points, 3.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in 29.7 minutes per contest. He is known for his defense, having been named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in 2020 while at Kansas.
Garrett will earn $107,027 during his 10-day contract, which will run through March 21 and cover the Hornets’ next six games. Should the Hornets continue to qualify for a hardship exception, they would have the option to offer Garrett a second 10-day deal.
