The Hornets have signed guard Marcus Garrett to a 10-day contract, the team announced in a press release.
The Hornets do not have an open spot on their 15-man roster but continue to qualify for a hardship exception. The team has four players — Brandon Miller, Tre Mann, Grant Williams, and Josh Okogie — who have each missed at least three consecutive games and are expected to remain sidelined for at least two more weeks. Under the hardship exception, Charlotte is permitted to temporarily add an extra player.
Garrett’s signing comes after the expiration of Malachi Flynn‘s 10-day contract on Monday. The Hornets opted not to re-sign Flynn, leaving the spot available for Garrett.
Undrafted out of Kansas in 2021, Garrett appeared in 12 NBA games during his rookie season with the Heat on a two-way contract. However, he has spent most of his professional career in the G League, including the past two seasons with the Greensboro Swarm, Charlotte’s affiliate.
This season, Garrett has appeared in 40 games for the Swarm, averaging 10.4 points, 3.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in 29.7 minutes per game. He has a shooting line of .448/.291/.702. Known for his defensive prowess, Garrett was named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in 2020 while at Kansas.
Garrett will earn $107,027 on his 10-day contract, which runs through March 21, covering the team’s next six games. If the Hornets still qualify for a hardship exception when the deal expires, they could offer Garrett a second 10-day contract.
