Karl Ravech among ESPN’s third round of layoffs this year

College basketball play-by-play man and longtime SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight host Karl Ravech is among those being let go by ESPN in its latest round of layoffs, per The Athletic.

ESPN is also making major cuts in its football department following its acquisition of NFL Network. This is the outlet’s third round of layoffs this year.

“Over the past several months, we’ve made significant progress integrating the NFL assets that we acquired into ESPN. Throughout this process, we have taken the time to carefully evaluate our collective teams, resources and organizational structure to best position us for the future. As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about job impacts that we will be communicating today,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro told staff in a memo obtained by Hoops Wire. “While most of the job impacts are tied to the acquisition, we will also notify colleagues in other parts of the company today that their positions have been impacted. We are committed to treating employees with compassion and respect and to providing support as they navigate this transition.”

Ravech spent 33 years at ESPN. While he has called college basketball and hosted NBA coverage over the years, he’s perhaps best known as one of the faces of the network’s baseball coverage.

Others reportedly affected, according to The Athletic, include former NFL quarterback Cam Newton, longtime SportsCenter anchor David Lloyd, former NFL linebacker Bart Scott, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, NFL Network analyst Charles Davis and NFL analyst Ryan Clark, who reportedly was informed during a taping of NFL Live on Monday.

Three years ago, ESPN’s layoffs included veteran NBA analysts Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson in one of the company’s more surprising rounds of cuts. This time, no prominent NBA personalities appear to have been affected.
