Kentavious Caldwell-Pope gave up nearly $4 million to join 76ers

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope left money on the table to join the 76ers.

According to Hoops Rumors, confirming reporting from Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Caldwell-Pope surrendered $3,876,529 in his buyout agreement with the Grizzlies.

That’s the exact amount he’ll earn on the one-year veteran minimum contract he’s expected to sign with Philadelphia after clearing waivers.

The move allows the Sixers to add another experienced veteran alongside LeBron James while staying under the NBA’s first-apron hard cap.

The buyout also benefits Memphis. Instead of carrying Caldwell-Pope’s full $21.6 million salary, the Grizzlies will now be responsible for roughly $17.7 million, giving the club additional financial flexibility entering the season.

Even after signing first-round pick Karim Lopez, Memphis remains below the salary cap while still operating as an over-the-cap team. That allows the Grizzlies to retain valuable trade exceptions, including the one created in the Jaren Jackson Jr. deal.

For Philadelphia, though, this was always the priority. After trading Johni Broome to the Clippers earlier Tuesday, the Sixers have now cleared the final hurdle to officially add Caldwell-Pope to a roster that already features LeBron James.
