Knicks sign James Wiseman, Bruce Brown, Ochai Agbaji in roster spree

James Wiseman? Sure. Why not.

The Knicks, apparently determined to invite every recognizable free agent to training camp, announced Wednesday that they signed Wiseman, Bruce Brown and Ochai Agbaji to non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contracts. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype first reported Brown’s agreement.

An Exhibit 9 allows each player to compete for a roster spot while limiting New York’s financial exposure if he suffers an injury before the regular season.

Brown, 30, is the most accomplished of the group. The versatile guard helped the Nuggets win the 2023 championship and appeared in all 82 games for Denver last season, averaging 7.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 38.5 percent on threes.

Agbaji, the 14th overall pick in 2022, split last season between the Raptors and Nets. He averaged 5.1 points after producing 10.4 per game and shooting 39.9 percent from deep for Toronto the previous year.

Then there is Wiseman, the No. 2 overall pick in 2020. The 7-footer has played only 152 games across six seasons because of persistent injuries, including knee trouble and a torn Achilles. He owns career averages of 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds.

The Knicks had already added John Konchar and Drew Eubanks this week. They also signed Liam Robbins and reportedly worked out Gabe Vincent.

New York has 13 guaranteed standard contracts and likely can carry only 14 players while remaining below the second apron. So Brown, Agbaji, Wiseman, Konchar and Eubanks could be fighting over one chair.

The Knicks wanted competition. Good news: They found it.
