Knicks signing John Konchar to one-year deal

The defending NBA champions are adding the sort of player good teams tend to find useful.

Free agent forward John Konchar has agreed to a one-year contract with the Knicks, agent George Langberg told Shams Charania of ESPN.

Konchar, 29, will enter his eighth NBA season after spending most of his career with the Grizzlies. He was traded to Utah in the Jaren Jackson Jr. deal, flipped to Minnesota last month and then waived by the Timberwolves.

As Hoops Wire previously relayed, the Heat, Magic and Raptors also expressed interest.

Konchar has never averaged more than 5.1 points, so nobody needs to redesign the offense. What he does offer is rebounding, defensive versatility, occasional ballhandling and a willingness to exist without the basketball.

That last quality can be fairly useful on a roster featuring Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and several other people who understandably enjoy possessing it.

The 6-foot-5 Konchar is a career 34.9 percent shooter from beyond the arc and can fill multiple roles off the bench. He also will receive his guaranteed $6.17 million salary from Minnesota this season, giving him the freedom to prioritize opportunity and fit.

This signing won’t inspire another parade through Manhattan. The Knicks already handled that part.
