Bronny James is headed to the G League, where the Lakers can give him something more useful than a seat on the bench. Namely, playing time.
The Lakers have assigned James and rookie guard Cameron Carr to the Coachella Valley Lakers ahead of Friday’s season opener in Palm Desert, as relayed by Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
For James, the assignment offers another opportunity to handle the ball, run an offense and work through mistakes with extended minutes. Those opportunities can be harder to find with the NBA club, particularly with the Lakers off to a 7-2 start.
They’re doing that in their first season without LeBron James following his eight-year run with the franchise. Bronny remains, with his own development still requiring attention.
Carr also figures to benefit from the additional work. The first-round pick missed the beginning of the season with an oblique strain before coming off the injury report earlier this month.
The assignments give both guards a chance to get into a rhythm while helping the Lakers’ affiliate begin its new chapter.
Previously known as the South Bay Lakers, the team relocated to the Coachella Valley and will host the Salt Lake City Stars at Acrisure Arena on Friday.
