NBA Combine Notes: Risers emerge, questions linger, decisions loom

Wings, bigs making moves

The NBA Combine always produces a few climbers. This year is no different, as detailed by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello Jeremy Woo.

Cameron Carr may have helped himself as much as anyone. The Baylor wing lit up scrimmages, knocking down six threes in a 30-point showing before shutting it down. That alone told evaluators what they needed to see.

Tarris Reed Jr. also stood out. The UConn big showed mobility, strength and versatility, backing up a strong NCAA tournament run. Teams are viewing him as a potential top-40 pick, with a chance to sneak into the first round.

Then there is Matt Able, who quietly boosted his stock with consistent scoring. He is still more of a long-term NBA play, but the tools are there.

Guards, forwards face questions

Not everyone left Chicago with momentum.

Koa Peat drew attention for changes to his jump shot. Shooting has always been the swing skill for him, and teams are watching closely. A return to school remains very much in play.

Tyler Tanner had a tougher week. The Vanderbilt guard struggled in scrimmages, and at his size, that matters more. He still has believers, but the margin is thin.

Decisions coming into focus

This is where it gets interesting.

Several prospects used the week to solidify their plans, Borzello Woo write. Dailyn Swain is “two feet in” on staying in the draft, even after a modest showing. Others are leaning the opposite way.

Rueben Chinyelu helped himself with strong production and elite measurements, but a return to college still feels likely. Same goes for Flory Bidunga, who may benefit from another year.

That is the balance this time of year. Flash enough to get noticed. Then decide if it is time.

The board is starting to take shape. The real movement is just beginning.
