NBA Draft Notes: Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, Wizards, Big Boards

With the NBA Draft just days away, there still appears to be plenty of uncertainty surrounding the No. 1 overall pick.

In fact, several prominent draft analysts remain divided on who deserves the top spot in this year’s class.

ESPN’s Jeremy Woo has made a significant change to his final big board, moving Kansas guard Darryn Peterson back to the No. 1 position ahead of AJ Dybantsa.

Peterson entered the season as Woo’s top prospect before Dybantsa eventually climbed to the top spot during the year.

According to Woo, further evaluation of Peterson’s season at Kansas, along with increased comfort regarding his medical outlook, led to the switch.

While Woo views the two prospects as closely matched, he ultimately gave Peterson the edge because of his shot-making ability and long-term upside as a lead guard.

The remainder of Woo’s top 12 prospects remained unchanged.

No consensus atop draft boards

Not everyone agrees with Woo’s ranking.

J. Kyle Mann of The Ringer recently released his own updated board, placing Cameron Boozer at No. 1, followed by Peterson, Dybantsa, Caleb Wilson and Keaton Wagler.

Mann’s rankings differ considerably from ESPN’s in several areas.

Among the biggest discrepancies, Mann is much higher on Brayden Burries, Jayden Quaintance, Henri Veesaar and Baba Miller, while placing Nate Ament, Mikel Brown Jr. and Aday Mara noticeably lower than Woo.

One of the most significant differences involves Karim Lopez. Mann ranks Lopez 36th overall, while Woo places him 14th.

Wizards keeping everyone guessing

Appearing on The Zach Lowe Show, DraftExpress analyst Jonathan Givony said he has long viewed Peterson as the top prospect in the class and has always believed the Wizards would seriously consider selecting him first overall.

Givony acknowledged that Washington remains one of the league’s most secretive teams when it comes to draft plans, making it difficult to gauge exactly how the organization views its options.

Still, he noted that the lack of a clear-cut No. 1 prospect has created intrigue around the top of the draft.

Givony compared the situation to 2022, when the Magic surprised much of the basketball world by selecting Paolo Banchero after Jabari Smith Jr. had been widely projected as the top pick.

Four days before draft night, it appears the Wizards may still have the league guessing.
