The 76-year-old coach, who has won five NBA championships and holds the record for most career coaching wins, has been sidelined since November 2 due to what the Spurs described as a “mild stroke.” His status for the 2025-26 season remains uncertain.

Interim coach Mitch Johnson will continue in his role for the remaining 25 games of the 2024-25 season.

“Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job, and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding,” Popovich said in the statement. “I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future.”

Popovich is in his second season of a five-year contract with the Spurs. Despite his absence, the team remains optimistic about his potential return.

The Spurs are currently 24-33, ranking 13th in the Western Conference. Their season has been further complicated by the injury to young star Victor Wembanyama, who was sidelined after doctors discovered a blood clot in his right shoulder during the All-Star break.

The Spurs have expressed hope that Wembanyama will be ready to play at the start of next season. Several reports suggested will be ready to do exactly that.
