Pistons
The Pistons could have a tricky negotiation ahead with Jalen Duren.
A spot on an All-NBA team would make Duren eligible for a Rose Rule extension worth up to 30 percent of the cap, though that may be higher than Detroit is comfortable going, per ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst.
One Western Conference executive suggested even a standard max might be a stretch.
“What’s a number that could leave both sides uncomfortable?” the executive said to ESPN. “That might be what it takes to ultimately get a deal done.”
A deal in the range of $35 million annually has been floated as a possible middle ground.
Celtics
Neemias Queta took a major step forward this season, but the Celtics may still be in the market for help at center.
Queta started 75 games and averaged 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks, finishing fourth in Most Improved Player voting. Even so, some around the league believe Boston needs a higher ceiling at the position to contend.
“Can he get you through 82? Yes,” one Western Conference scout told ESPN. “But can he patchwork it through the playoffs? There’s a ceiling.”
Boston’s path to upgrading won’t be simple after moving several tradable contracts last offseason. The mid-level exception could be an option, though landing an impact big that way is never easy.
Mavericks
The Mavericks made a splash by hiring Masai Ujiri, and around the league, the move checks several boxes.
Owner Patrick Dumont had been seeking a proven, high-profile executive to lead basketball operations, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line. Ujiri fits that description and brings a willingness to engage publicly, something Dallas leadership has lacked.
Dumont, along with CEO Rick Welts and president Ethan Casson, led the search process. Stein reports the Mavericks also spoke with Bob Myers, who declined, and had interest in Tim Connelly but were denied permission to pursue him.
Ujiri had been waiting for the right opportunity after leaving Toronto last year. Dallas now hands him the reins.
