NBA Rumors: Thunder, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nuggets, Christian Braun, Timberwolves

Thunder

The Thunder possess one of the NBA’s deepest collections of young talent and draft assets. That hasn’t stopped speculation linking them to Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, however, rival executives around the league do not expect Oklahoma City to aggressively pursue a deal for the two-time MVP.

Stein reported that multiple league observers would be genuinely surprised if the Thunder made a serious run at Antetokounmpo.

The reasoning is fairly simple.

Oklahoma City has spent years carefully building one of the league’s most stable and successful organizations under executive vice president Sam Presti.

The Thunder also came within one victory of reaching the NBA Finals despite playing much of the Western Conference finals without Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell.

While the assets exist to make a blockbuster trade, league sentiment continues to suggest Oklahoma City prefers its current path.

Nuggets

Denver could face a different challenge.

According to Stein, rival teams expect the Nuggets to make Christian Braun and Cameron Johnson available in trade discussions this summer.

The Nuggets are reportedly prioritizing a new deal for restricted free agent Peyton Watson, but keeping the current roster intact would likely push Denver deep into second-apron territory.

Johnson’s situation may be particularly intriguing.

The veteran forward is entering the final year of his contract and carries a salary of roughly $23 million, making him a potentially attractive trade chip for teams seeking immediate help.

Braun’s value remains strong as well, though his recently signed long-term extension could complicate trade discussions.

Denver still appears committed to competing around Nikola Jokic.

The question is whether the Nuggets can do so without making significant financial sacrifices elsewhere on the roster.

Timberwolves

The Timberwolves are entering another important offseason after falling short of their goal of reaching the NBA Finals.

Minnesota was eliminated by the Spurs in the second round, and according to Yossi Gozlan of Third Apron, the organization now faces several significant decisions as it looks to close the gap on San Antonio and Oklahoma City.

One of the biggest questions centers on payroll.

New ownership must determine whether the Timberwolves are willing to remain a second-apron team, a decision that could have major implications for roster construction and trade activity this summer.

The answer may ultimately dictate how aggressive Minnesota can be, whether that means pursuing upgrades or shedding salary to create additional flexibility.

There’s also the Anthony Edwards factor.

The franchise cornerstone is eligible for another contract extension this offseason, and the Timberwolves will need to demonstrate they have a clear plan for building a legitimate championship contender around him.

Minnesota still boasts one of the league’s most talented rosters, but after an early playoff exit, standing still may not be an option.
