NBA Rumors: Wizards, Trae Young, Celtics, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Pistons

Wizards

The Wizards have the No. 1 overall pick. They have a young roster. They have momentum entering the offseason.

And they also have a pretty significant Trae Young decision looming.

All signs continue pointing toward Young and the Wizards working out a contract extension ahead of his June 22 player-option deadline. ESPN’s Bobby Marks recently floated a three-year, $130 million structure with a player option on the back end, a deal that could give Washington a little more flexibility moving forward while keeping Young in place as the face of the rebuild.

Either way, the Wizards haven’t exactly been shy about how much they value him.

“We targeted players that we believe in,” GM Will Dawkins said earlier this year. “He’s a piece to the puzzle.”

Young only appeared in five games after arriving from Atlanta before suffering a hamstring injury in March. But even in limited action, he averaged 17.9 points and eight assists in just over 20 minutes a night and gave Washington fans a glimpse of what the offense could eventually look like.

Now comes the interesting part.

The Wizards could potentially select Darryn Peterson with the top pick, and Peterson has made it clear he views himself as a point guard. So the fit alongside Young immediately becomes one of the bigger storylines of the summer.

Celtics

The Celtics continue getting linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo because, well, basically everybody is getting linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The problem for Boston is pretty straightforward. Pulling off a trade may be almost impossible without sacrificing Jaylen Brown or stripping away most of the depth that helped make the Celtics contenders in the first place.

FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd added another wrinkle this week when he suggested Giannis could become even more valuable because of Victor Wembanyama’s rise in the Western Conference.

Cowherd essentially argued Giannis may be the one player physically capable of matching up with Wembanyama in a playoff series, which could drive teams like the Thunder, Mavericks and others to push even harder in trade talks.

That obviously would not help Boston.

The one thing potentially working in the Celtics’ favor? Geography.

If Giannis prefers staying in the Eastern Conference, Boston suddenly becomes more logical. Of course, Milwaukee may decide it wants him as far away from the East as possible.

Either way, the clock is ticking. The Bucks reportedly hope to have clarity on Antetokounmpo’s future before the NBA Draft in late June.

Pistons

The Pistons enter the offseason in an unusual spot. Expectations changed dramatically after a 60-win season and a trip to the second round under J.B. Bickerstaff.

Now the pressure ramps up.

Detroit’s biggest internal question may revolve around center Jalen Duren, who is headed toward restricted free agency after an All-Star season. Duren averaged nearly 20 points and 11 rebounds during the regular season, though his production dipped noticeably in the playoffs against Orlando and Cleveland.

Even so, the Pistons still view him as a foundational piece.

Beyond Duren, president Trajan Langdon made it clear Detroit remains focused on adding perimeter shooting and additional ball-handling help after exploring multiple trade scenarios during the season.

The Pistons own the No. 21 pick in the draft, have financial flexibility and suddenly look much closer to contention than rebuilding. That also means every decision matters a little more now.
