In his prime, Vince Carter was known as a high-flyer and sort of a poor man’s Michael Jordan who could help lift you to wins. Like Jordan, Carter went to North Carolina and will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Now, Carter will have his jersey retired by the Brooklyn Nets — in a special ceremony on Jan. 25 at the Barclays Center.
“This is the seventh jersey retirement in franchise history, joining Drazen Petrovic, Jason Kidd, John Williamson, Bill Melchionni, Julius Erving, and Buck Williams,” wrote Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
Carter will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Oct. 13.
An eight-time All-Star and Rookie of the Year in 1999, Carer made two All-NBA teams with the Raptors and became one of the league’s most-noted dunkers, winning the Slam Dunk contest in 2000.
He is also the only player in NBA history to have played 22 seasons, retiring in 2020 when in his early 40s. (Though LeBron James will certainly challenge and perhaps break that mark.)
Most of Carter’s memorable years came with the Raptors, though he also had a nice run with the Nets. He also spent time with the Magic, Suns, Mavericks, Grizzlies, Kings and Hawks. He ranks 24th in the NBA in career points at 25,728.
“We’re thrilled to honor former Nets player Vince Carter, who contributed so much to this organization both on and off the court,” Nets owner Joe Tsai said in a statement. “He’s an important part of Nets franchise history and we look forward to welcoming him to Barclays Center … to celebrate his legacy.”
