Kelly Oubre Jr. is still learning the Pacers’ system. He already knows he likes it.
The veteran wing said after Friday’s practice that Indiana’s quick-moving, unselfish style has been an adjustment, but a welcome one.
“Every day is a learning process,” Oubre told reporters. “It’s gonna be like that all year. But one thing I’ve learned is that I love this style of play.”
Oubre specifically pointed to the Pacers’ emphasis on making quick decisions.
“I love thriving in a 0.5 system, making quick decisions and playing unselfish basketball,” he said. “I’m excited, and the sky is the limit.”
Center Jay Huff likes what he has seen, too, calling Oubre a “really, really good addition” and praising his ability to attack the basket, shoot from the perimeter and create opportunities for teammates.
Oubre also indicated that basketball wasn’t the only attraction when he chose Indiana. At 30 and with a family, he was looking for somewhere that made sense away from the court.
“I have a family and my life has slowed down tremendously,” he said. “Indiana is the perfect place for us to grow, get rooted and continue to just evolve as people.”
Sometimes free agency really can be that simple. Right team, right system, right time.
