Peyton Watson viewed as guy who can push Cavs ‘over the edge’

ESPN released a list of “things we’re watching” now that NBA training camps have begun. For the Cavaliers, that means are all eyes are on you, Mr. Peyton Watson.

While nothing has been determined, per coach Kenny Atkinson, many suspect Watson will be the fifth starter, alongside Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. ESPN wondered whether Watson can lift the Cavs to greater heights.

“The Cavs have been heavily invested in four of their five starters for years — Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen in the front court with Donovan Mitchell and now James Harden, after a midseason exchange for Darius Garland, in the backcourt,” Jamal Collier wrote. “But they’ve had a rotating cast filling out the last spot next to them — Dean Wade, Max Strus or De’Andre Hunter, most recently — all of whom have failed to raise the ceiling of the lineup.”

After a run to the Eastern Conference finals, the Cavs obviously would like to take it a step further this year. They were initially hoping LeBron James would return. But they’re equally happy with Watson, who’s 20 years younger than LeBron and, at this stage, more athletic.

Any team could use athleticism and defense at the wing spot. Watson seems like a riser in all areas.

“Watson, 24, is coming off his best season with the Nuggets and has the potential to push this group over the edge even more if he can continue his improved 3-point shooting to go along with his defensive chops,” Collier concluded.
