The Sixers didn’t hire Mike Gansey because of one move. But his track record helping identify talent in Cleveland likely didn’t hurt.
As noted by Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, Gansey played a role in evaluating trade and free-agent targets for the Cavaliers, including Max Strus and Sam Merrill, two players who became important contributors during the team’s rise into Eastern Conference contention.
Merrill, in particular, turned into one of the Cavs’ best value additions.

Cleveland initially signed him to a 10-day contract before eventually converting him to a standard deal. He has since developed into an important rotation player and one of the NBA’s most reliable long-range threats.
Gansey spent more than a decade with the Cavs organization, working his way from front-office intern to general manager before departing for Philadelphia’s top basketball operations job.
The Olmsted Falls, Ohio, native also earned a reputation as a strong talent evaluator.
During his time in Cleveland’s front office, the Cavs drafted players such as Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jaylon Tyson while also helping build a roster that reached the Eastern Conference finals this season.
Gansey was heavily involved in the organization’s draft process and roster construction, serving as president Koby Altman’s top lieutenant for several years.
The Cavs also completed a number of notable transactions during Gansey’s rise through the organization, including trades for Donovan Mitchell, De’Andre Hunter, Dennis Schroder and James Harden, while adding valuable role players such as Merrill, Strus and Ty Jerome.
Now, Gansey takes over a Sixers team looking to return to championship contention.
If his track record in Cleveland is any indication, talent evaluation will likely remain one of his greatest strengths.
