Sixers seek collaborative GM after moving on from Daryl Morey

The 76ers are turning the page. Now comes the hard part.

Philadelphia fired Daryl Morey after six seasons that included regular playoff trips but no conference finals appearances. The latest exit, a second-round sweep at the hands of the Knicks, made the direction clear.

Enter Bob Myers.

“This is a blue-blood organization,” Myers said, via the AP. “We’re committed to winning.”

Myers, who is overseeing the search, made one thing clear. The next general manager will not operate alone.

“You need good people that are in harmony,” he said.

Ownership echoed that sentiment. Managing partner Josh Harris acknowledged the frustration and the urgency.

“No one is more frustrated than me that we have not achieved our goals,” Harris said. “We owe it to you and the city to be better.”

The roster presents both promise and questions.

It starts with Joel Embiid and Paul George, with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe as younger pieces. Health, depth and consistency all remain issues.

“We have to look at what happened this year and be honest about it,” Myers said. “Can this model work?”

Myers said he would like to have a hire in place before the draft, but stressed patience over speed.

“I’m a big believer in character and leadership,” he said. “It takes a great level of uncomfortability to win a championship,” Myers said. “There is no wave of a wand.”

One thing is already settled: Coach Nick Nurse is staying.

“The team played hard for Nick,” Harris said. “He’s our coach moving forward.”
