The Philadelphia 76ers have waived forward Pete Nance, sending the second-year forward back to the NBA free agent list.
Nance has served two stints with the Sixers this season after starting the year with the Cleveland Cavaliers in training camp.
He’s now likely headed back to the G League, perhaps with either the Cleveland Charge or Delaware Blue Coats. But any NBA team is free to claim him once he clears waivers.
The son of Cavs legend Larry Nance and brother of Atlanta Hawks forward/center Larry Nance Jr., Pete Nance appeared in seven games this season, averaging 2.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game, shooting 33.3 percent from the floor.
Nance, who was waived on January 7 after a brief stint with the team, first joined the Sixers on December 3.
The 6-foot-9 forward has been turning heads in the G League this season, averaging 16.7 points on 50 percent shooting, along with 6.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.6 blocks over 14 games split between the Charge and the Blue Coats.
Larry Sr. played for the Cavs from 1987-94, with Larry Jr.’s run in Cleveland taking place from 2018-21.
Per Erin Grugan of SB Nation: “This move came before the passing of a Jan. 7 deadline that fully guarantees the contracts of two-way players with their teams through that date. Nance will instead receive a prorated portion of his two-way salary.
“With no corresponding move announced, the Sixers are now one of three teams in the association with an open two-way spot on the roster alongside the Orlando Magic and the Golden State Warriors. Jeff Dowtin Jr. and Justin Edwards currently occupy the other two-way slots for Philadelphia.
“With the way this season is going for the Sixers, a pickup of another two-way caliber player isn’t likely to tip the scales in a major way, but we shall see what the team decides to do going forward with their open spot.”
