Stephen Curry in no rush to sign Warriors extension

Warriors star Stephen Curry has not decided when or how he will extend his expiring contract. He insists the delay won’t create any drama.

Curry became eligible for a new deal nearly four weeks ago and can sign a one- or two-year maximum extension, accept less than the max or wait until later in the league year.

Golden State has presented all of those possibilities and Curry will remain extension-eligible through June 30, 2027, according to Anthony Slater of ESPN.

“It’s going to happen at the right time, once I have all the information I need,” Curry said.

The 38-year-old reiterated that his goal is to finish his career with the Warriors. He also said testing unrestricted free agency does not interest him.

The unresolved question is how his next contract fits into Golden State’s larger plan.

Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green are among several players with expiring contracts. Depending on its decisions, the organization could create more than $100 million in cap room next summer.

A maximum or near-maximum contract for Curry would reduce that figure. Taking less could give the front office additional flexibility to reshape the roster around him.

“I want to be on a competitive team,” Curry said. “I want to have an opportunity to have some flexibility because we haven’t had that in years past.”

Waiting allows Curry and the Warriors to see how this season unfolds and what opportunities may be available next summer.

Curry appeared in only 43 games last season because of a knee issue, but told ESPN he has no hesitation about his physical condition entering camp.

The contract remains unsettled. His preference to stay in Golden State does not.
