The uncertainty is over. The Warriors are bringing back Steve Kerr.
Kerr has agreed to a two-year contract to remain Golden State’s head coach, per ESPN, ending weeks of internal discussions about his future and keeping him in place for what will be his 13th season.
The deal will again make Kerr the highest-paid coach in the NBA annually, according to league sources.
“It was never going to be about money,” one team source said. “We had to make the best basketball decision.”
That decision is continuity.
Kerr met multiple times with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy in recent weeks, discussing everything from offensive philosophy to the long-term direction of the roster. By early this week, there was a growing sense internally that Kerr would return. The final details came together late Friday into Saturday.
It wasn’t always trending that way.
Kerr openly acknowledged the possibility of stepping away after the season, saying at the time, “These jobs all have an expiration date.” The Warriors finished 37-45 and were eliminated in the play-in, leading to real questions about whether a new voice might be needed.
Behind the scenes, the organization did some preliminary homework on potential replacements.
But the core voices mattered most.
Ownership. The front office. And Stephen Curry.
“I want Coach to be happy,” Curry said at the time. “I want him to be excited about the job.”
Now, he’ll get that chance.
Kerr, hired in 2014, has led the Warriors to four championships and six Finals appearances, building one of the defining dynasties of the modern NBA. He now returns for what could be the next phase, and possibly final chapter, of the Curry era.
The focus shifts quickly.
Golden State holds the No. 11 lottery slot and is expected to be active this offseason in reshaping the roster.
With Kerr back, the direction is clear. The window may look different.
