Trae Young agrees to new four-year deal with Wizards

Trae Young isn’t going anywhere.

According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic, Young has agreed to a new four-year maximum contract with the Wizards worth approximately $212 million. The deal includes a player option for the final season.

The agreement comes after Young declined his $48.97 million player option for 2026-27 and officially entered free agency.

Even then, few around the league expected him to leave Washington.

As Hoops Wire recently noted, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported that Young was likely to re-sign with the Wizards on a lucrative new contract after enjoying his brief stint with the franchise following last season’s trade from Atlanta.

That’s exactly what happened. What’s interesting is the structure.

Young reportedly chose a deal similar to what he could have received on the open market rather than signing the larger five-year maximum contract available from Washington. The shorter agreement gives him additional flexibility down the road, particularly with a player option included in the final year.

The Wizards have made it clear they view Young as a centerpiece.

Washington acquired the four-time All-Star during the season and now appears committed to building around a core that includes Young, Anthony Davis and the No. 1 overall pick in Tuesday’s draft.

When healthy, Young remains one of the NBA’s elite playmakers.

Although injuries limited him to 15 games last season, he entered the year coming off a campaign in which he averaged 24.2 points and a career-high 11.6 assists.

So while Young technically became one of the biggest names available in free agency, the outcome was ultimately the one most people around the league expected.

  1. Not worth it and in fact none of these players are worth the overinflated contracts they are getting. They can’t even handle playing an 82 game season. 🏀😎
