Victor Wembanyama: ‘This is what I’m built for’

The Spurs are headed to New York facing a daunting 2-0 deficit in the NBA Finals.

Victor Wembanyama isn’t backing down.

The San Antonio star acknowledged his role in the chaotic closing moments of Game 2, when the Spurs squandered an opportunity to even the series before falling to the Knicks.

Wembanyama committed a costly turnover and missed a pair of perimeter shots in the final minute as New York escaped with a one-point victory.

The Knicks know they benefited from those mistakes.

“You can’t do that to a team that is that good, give chances like that,” Knicks forward Mikal Bridges said, via the New York Daily News. “We got to be way better.”

For his part, Wembanyama is choosing to view the setback as part of the process.

“This is everything that I wished for,” he said, via ESPN. “There’s really no reason to overthink it. This is what I’m built for.”

Despite the disappointment of dropping the first two games at home, Wembanyama believes the Spurs can use the experience as fuel moving forward.

“It felt like we did a lot of things wrong, but we were also relentless and kept pushing,” he said. “I know it’s not wasted because our lessons are learned. I know we’re not going to make the mistakes of the past again.”

Game 3 is set for Monday night at Madison Square Garden, where the Spurs will attempt to climb back into the series.
