The Golden State Warriors traded Monta Ellis to the Milwaukee Bucks for Andrew Bogut in 2012.
However, the Warriors almost traded Stephen Curry instead of Ellis.
“I was getting treatment. And I was basically told because after it happened, I was, I’m not going to say who it was, but I was really close to someone that I was doing treatment with there for my ankle,” Bogut said. “I was already out for the season, doing rehab every day. They were like, ‘Yeah, it was either Monta or Steph and we, the team, decided to go with Monta based on health.’
“So I was like, ‘Alright.’ But then you look at hindsight, the Warriors made this genius move and freed up Steph Curry and the whole narrative that followed. It could have easily gone the other way. It’s a sliding door moment. They’ll deny it, but I know it for a fact.”
Warriors fans were mad when Ellis was traded. They booed owner Joe Lacob.
However, the trade worked out very well for Golden State. Curry has won two MVPs, one Finals MVP and four championships with the Warriors. He’s the greatest shooter in NBA history and will be in the Hall of Fame one day.
Meanwhile, Ellis never won a championship despite being a talented scorer.
Curry has career averages of 24.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.4 assists. He has made 11 All-Star teams and 10 All-NBA teams.
