Warriors, Cavs, Heat viewed as potential LeBron James destinations

The Warriors, Cavaliers and Heat are viewed around the NBA as potential destinations for LeBron James, multiple sources told Hoops Wire.

James, 41, has informed the Lakers he will not return as an unrestricted free agent, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday, citing agent Rich Paul.

So, all we know about James at the moment is that he’s not returning to the Lakers. But from the sounds of things, he’s not retiring, either.

He turns 42 at the end of December. Yet he’s still coming off another productive season and a quality individual showing in the playoffs.

James spent eight years in LA, winning a title alongside Anthony Davis in the Disney bubble in 2020. But it’s been a rocky playoff road since then, with multiple early-round exits. This past season, the Lakers were swept by the Thunder in the second round.

The Lakers traded Davis for Luka Doncic in 2024, and while both James and Doncic always said the right things, there were questions about the fit. While the Lakers were open to a James return, it’s become clear they’re ready to build around Doncic, sources said.

“Lakers president Rob Pelinka and Rich Paul spoke a short time ago about the four-time champion’s plans, sources said. James chose to inform the Lakers well before the start of free agency tonight out of courtesy and appreciation for their run together, and to allow LA to conduct its offseason business,” Charania reported.

James’ last title before winning one with the Lakers came with the Cavs a decade ago. League sources view them as the sentimental favorite — though Cleveland will have to pull off some salary cap gymnastics. All of it depends on where James really wants to go and how much he wants to make.

For the record, James spent Monday golfing at Firestone Country Club in his hometown of Akron. He posted a clip to social media of himself driving through town as well.

Meanwhile, the Warriors reportedly are trying to trade for Davis, now with the Wizards. One concept that’s been floated would pair Davis and James with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green to form a new “Big Four.” Like James and Davis, Green is a Paul client.

Finally, the Heat just added Giannis Antetokounmpo in a trade with the Bucks. James, of course, won his first two championships in Miami.
