Suns
Devin Booker appears close to returning for the Suns. The star guard did “everything” during Friday’s practice and was again a full participant Saturday, according to Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic.
“Responding well,” coach Jordan Ott said. “That’s encouraging. No issues. Practiced today. Just see exactly how it responds.”
Booker has missed the past three games with a right groin strain and could be back Sunday against the Lakers. Phoenix has been cautious, but the recent workload suggests the Suns are nearing a green light.
Knicks
OG Anunoby’s impact was felt almost immediately after his return from a hamstring strain earlier this month. New York is 3-0 since getting Anunoby back, and the numbers continue to underline his value, per Jared Schwartz of the New York Post.
Since acquiring Anunoby during the 2023-24 season, the Knicks are 76-36 when he plays, compared to 25-20 when he does not (entering Saturday). The difference has been noticeable on both ends.
“OG, he was all over the place,” Josh Hart said after Tuesday’s win in Toronto. “He really helped start that run. Huge shoutout to him. He really changed the tide of the game.”
Coach Mike Brown has also continued to push Jalen Brunson’s MVP candidacy, as Andrew Crane of the New York Post notes. When asked whether Brunson already belongs among the greatest players in franchise history, Brown did not hesitate.
“He’s helped them win a lot of games,” he said. “It’s his team, he’s the guy here, he’s an MVP candidate. What he’s doing is franchise-altering.”
Spurs
Victor Wembanyama is listed as probable for Saturday’s NBA Cup semifinal against Oklahoma City, and Spurs coach Mitch Johnson spoke Friday as if the rookie phenom is expected to play, according to Tom Orsborn of The San Antonio Express-News.
“He’s going to be tired,” Johnson said. “I would expect an early sub and not his normal minutes.”
Wembanyama has been sidelined since Nov. 14 with a left calf strain and, according to ESPN’s Michael C. Wright, had been pushing behind the scenes to return. The French center acknowledged he wanted back sooner but deferred to the medical staff.
“I would have come back earlier,” Wembanyama said. “But it is more reasonable to listen to them.”
Wembanyama also pointed to the Spurs’ 9-3 record in his absence as a positive development, praising the team’s balance and trust.
“Everybody has something to eat,” he said. “Everybody can step up. It’s beautiful to see.”
