Pistons
According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, there remains a strong expectation that the Pistons will retain restricted free agent Jalen Duren despite an uneven playoff performance.
Duren appeared headed toward a maximum contract after earning All-NBA Third Team honors and finishing second in Most Improved Player voting. While his postseason may have cooled some of that momentum, rival executives still expect him to land a deal approaching $40 million annually.
One Eastern Conference executive told ESPN that Detroit is unlikely to let Cade Cunningham‘s longtime running mate get away.
“If he wants to get a max, they’ll tell him to go get one,” the executive said. “But he’s Cade’s guy.”
Jazz
Walker Kessler is another restricted free agent expected to stay put.
Even after Utah acquired Jaren Jackson Jr. during the season, league observers believe Kessler remains a major part of the franchise’s future. Executives project his next contract could land somewhere between $25 million and $30 million per year.
“It appears Utah is gearing up to keep him,” one Eastern Conference scout told ESPN.
Lakers
The Lakers may not be expected to offer Austin Reaves a maximum contract, but don’t mistake that for a lack of interest.
League scouts and executives who spoke with ESPN generally believe Reaves will command roughly $40 million annually on his next deal. The Nets have been mentioned as a potential suitor, but the prevailing belief around the league is that Los Angeles and Reaves ultimately find common ground.
“The Lakers need to keep him,” one scout said.
Trail Blazers
Robert Williams III finally enjoyed his healthiest season in years, and that could translate into significant free-agent interest.
According to Bontemps, rival executives believe Williams could command a starting salary in the $10 million-to-$15 million range, though teams will undoubtedly weigh his lengthy injury history.
“When he plays, he’s good,” one Western Conference executive told ESPN. “You just can’t expect him to start for you because he won’t be on the court if you play him that many minutes.”
As always with Williams, talent has never been the question.
Availability remains the bigger one.
