Cavs could face challenge retaining Dean Wade in free agency

The Cavaliers would like to keep forward Dean Wade, but doing so may not be easy.

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Wade is expected to draw interest on the free-agent market this summer, particularly from teams that have access to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception.

As Scotto noted, Cleveland enters the offseason operating near the second apron, a reality that could complicate efforts to retain the veteran forward if his market becomes competitive.

Scotto also reported that Wade and the Cavs discussed a contract extension during the season, though those talks ultimately did not result in a deal. Despite interest from other teams, Wade remained in Cleveland through the year.

One of those clubs was reportedly the Rockets. According to Scotto, Houston had interest in acquiring Wade before ultimately signing Dorian Finney-Smith in free agency.

Since entering the league with the Cavs, Wade has developed into one of the team’s most dependable role players. As Scotto pointed out, the 6-foot-9 forward has started 160 of his 330 career games while providing versatility on both ends of the floor.

Wade has also become a fairly reliable perimeter threat, shooting nearly 37 percent from three-point range for his career. That said, he doesn’t shoot a whole lot.

Meanwhile, he has demonstrated the ability to defend multiple positions, making him a valuable option in a league that increasingly prioritizes size and versatility on the wing. The Cavs love him for that very reason.

Along with all that, sources have consistently indicated the Cavs prefer continuity around their core group. Whether that continuity ultimately includes Wade may depend on how aggressive rival teams become once free agency opens.
