The Cavaliers would like to keep Dean Wade. The question is whether they’ll be able to afford him.
As previously relayed by Hoops Wire, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype indicated that Wade is expected to receive interest from teams with access to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, potentially creating a challenge for a Cavaliers team operating near the second apron.
Wade, 29, has spent his entire NBA career in Cleveland and remains one of the organization’s most trusted role players. He has started 160 games over seven seasons, shoots nearly 37 percent from three-point range for his career and can defend multiple positions.
The Cavs value all of that. But if Wade’s market becomes competitive, Cleveland may find itself facing difficult financial decisions.
With free agency approaching, here are four potential landing spots for the veteran forward.
1. Cavaliers
This remains the most logical outcome.
League sources have consistently indicated the Cavs prefer continuity around their core group, and Wade fits that philosophy perfectly. He knows the system, understands his role and has earned the trust of the coaching staff.
The challenge, of course, is money.
The Cavs are already projected to operate near the second apron, limiting their flexibility. They also have other roster decisions to make, including free-agent guard Keon Ellis.
If Wade’s market remains manageable, the Cavs would likely love to bring him back.
2. Suns
This may be the biggest threat to the Cavs.
Suns coach Jordan Ott spent a season on Kenny Atkinson’s coaching staff and knows Wade’s game well. Phoenix also has a clear need for size, defense and floor spacing on the wing.
Wade checks all three boxes.
He isn’t a star, but he does a lot of the little things winning teams value, and that could make him an attractive target for a Suns team looking to build depth around its core.
3. Trail Blazers
Portland has been mentioned by several league sources as a sensible fit.
The Blazers are still building around a young nucleus and could use additional frontcourt depth and veteran stability. Wade’s ability to defend multiple positions while stretching the floor would fit nicely alongside Portland’s collection of athletic guards and wings.
Unlike the Cavs, the Blazers have some real financial flexibility.
4. Rockets
Houston has shown interest before.
According to Scotto, the Rockets explored Wade as a potential addition before ultimately landing Dorian Finney-Smith. That prior interest is noteworthy.
The Rockets also still believe they can become a serious contender in the Western Conference — and could be looking for additional depth pieces capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.
Wade’s versatility and playoff experience would likely appeal to a team with championship aspirations.
That said, I truly believe the Cavs remain the favorite. They know Wade, trust Wade and value what he brings.
Whether they can outbid the competition may be the bigger question.
