The Cavaliers made it official last week, announcing that center Jarrett Allen has signed a multiyear contract extension. But hey man, that doesn’t seem to mean much as far as other teams are concerned.
Per Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Cavs are likely to continue to receive calls from opposing teams about Allen. No big shock there. For the record, Allen’s extension is reportedly for three years and $91 million.
“It’s believed that Allen was essentially obligated to sign the deal before Aug. 6 as a condition of Cleveland extending him at the maximum amount allowed based on the 26-year-old’s current contract,” Stein wrote. “Allen thus becomes eligible to be traded on Feb. 2, 2025 … four days before next season’s deadline.
“Rest assured that the Cavaliers’ proverbial phone will continue to ring with Allen interest, as it has for years, given the ongoing belief leaguewide that Evan Mobley and Allen are a suspect long-term fit as a duo.”
That said, the Cavs fully intend to see how it goes with their core four of Allen, Mobley, Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland under new coach Kenny Atkinson. From the sounds of things, they won’t be moving any of those players anytime soon.
“We couldn’t be more excited that Jarrett Allen chose to extend in Cleveland for the prime of his career,” Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman said in a statement. “Jarrett’s growth as a player, at just 26 years old, was accelerated when he earned his first All-Star selection in 2022.
“He is the anchor of our core group of players and his presence fits our vision for sustainable success. Jarrett also embodies the culture and values of our organization, and we look forward to achieving even greater things together.”
One of the top centers in the NBA, Allen averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 1.1 blocks in 2023-24 for the Cavaliers while shooting 63.4% from the field and 74.2% from the free-throw line.
He carries career averages of 12.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.3 blocks with the Brooklyn Nets and Cavaliers.
Cleveland is 139-113 with Allen in the lineup.
The New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder were among those linked to Allen, though if those teams did call the Cavs, they got nowhere. And again, that wouldn’t change if they called again — especially since Allen can’t be traded until February, anyway.
