Cavs, Lakers remain teams most often linked to Jonathan Kuminga

Other than the Lakers, the Cavaliers are the team that remains the “most-often connected” to unrestricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga, according to Dan Woike of The Athletic.

It’s actually been that way since the start of free agency a few weeks back. Kuminga has worked out in Cleveland in the past, and by all accounts, would love to join the Cavs. His agent, Aaron Turner, is a product of nearby Orange, Ohio.

As for the Lakers, Woike reports that momentum has stalled. Right now, LA has 16 players under guaranteed contract (or will once the Matisse Thybulle signing becomes official). So someone will need to be traded or waived already.

Of course, if either the Cavs or Lakers were to acquire Kuminga, it would highly likely need to be via a sign-and-trade arrangement with the Hawks. Cleveland, like several others, is continuing to wait on LeBron James before making another move.

But sources have told Hoops Wire there are scenarios in which the Cavs could end up with both James and Kuminga. How that would happen, well, is anyone’s guess.

Kuminga, 23, is 6-foot-7 and was sent from the Warriors to the Hawks at the trade deadline. He appeared in 36 games overall last season, averaging 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds, shooting 46 percent from the field. The Hawks opted not to exercise his player option at the end of the season, making him an unrestricted free agent.
