Cavs should think long-term with No. 29 pick

The Cavaliers own the No. 29 overall pick in this month’s NBA Draft, and while it likely won’t produce an immediate contributor, it could still carry significance for the franchise’s future.

That’s the argument made by Tommy Wild of Cavs Roundtable, who suggested Cleveland should resist the temptation to focus solely on NBA-ready prospects and instead target the player with the highest long-term upside.

Wild noted that the Cavaliers are already built to contend around a core that includes Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. With much of the roster expected to return, a rookie selected late in the first round would likely face an uphill battle for rotation minutes.

As Wild pointed out, Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson had stretches this past season when minutes were difficult to find for players such as Keon Ellis, Jaylon Tyson and Nae’Qwan Tomlin. That reality could make it easier for Cleveland to take a patient approach with a younger prospect.

Wild also highlighted the organization’s commitment to player development, something Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman has repeatedly emphasized. Altman has frequently cited Atkinson’s reputation for developing young players as one of the reasons Cleveland hired him.

The broader point, according to Wild, is that contending teams often find valuable contributors in unexpected places. While late first-round picks don’t always develop into meaningful pieces, the occasional success story can provide a contender with an affordable rotation player on a team-friendly contract.

Given the Cavs’ current roster construction, Wild noted that they’re in a position to prioritize long-term potential over immediate help.

That’s a reasonable case. While the Cavs could always explore using the pick in a trade, selecting and developing a high-upside prospect may ultimately provide more value than searching for a short-term fix.

    Comment about:
“Cavs president Koby Altman has repeatedly emphasized player development as a cornerstone of the organization. He touched on that again after the season, noting that Cleveland hired Atkinson in large part because of his reputation for developing young talent.”
He, Atkinson, ought to be in the offseason working severely on his reputation for developing a sense of momentum swing & calling of timeouts!”
If some guy 3,000 miles away watching a playoff game on TV can realize it’s closing toward an 18-1 swing, SOMEONE ought to SEE IT COURTSIDE before it happens say maybe 8-1, for Pete’s sake let’s have some triage & stop the bleeding! THE WHOLE COACHING STAFF is suspect on this most all season on being too late on momentum swings & timeouts – big reason they can’t seem to sustain a lead.
